College Students Set Up a Street Stall Inside a Museum – Here’s the Heartwarming Reason

2026-05-08 11:26:02

Wuhan, China – April 21, 2026*

On the second floor of the busy Hubei Provincial Museum, several college students appeared with small carts and simple stalls. They were not regular vendors. On their shelves were beautifully patterned wooden objects – pyrography art.

Pyrography, also known as wood burning, is an ancient craft that started in the Western Han Dynasty and grew popular in the Eastern Han Dynasty. It uses a heated metal pen to burn designs into wood. This traditional skill is now being revived by a 23-year-old student named Jiang Panpan.

Jiang Panpan grew up in a family that practiced pyrography. She began learning the basic techniques in middle school. By high school, her skills had improved so much that people started calling her a “young inheritor” of this cultural heritage. After entering The university of. Wuhan Institute of technology., she founded the “Zhuohua Intangible Cultural Heritage Art Troupe”. The group’s goal is to help more people see and appreciate this ancient craft.

During an exchange activity on campus, Jiang discovered that similar pyrography techniques exist in other Asian countries, such as Japan, South Korea, and Vietnam. She realized that cultural heritage is not closed – it has been shared and influenced across borders for centuries. This inspired her to study the craft traditions of Central and South Asia.

With great effort, Jiang began to combine traditional Chinese pyrography with foreign utensil shapes and decorative patterns. She created new works such as ukuleles with pyrography designs, wine bottles decorated with burned art, and long wooden spoons with detailed patterns. All these items were displayed on her small stall in the museum.

But the stall was not just for selling things. The real goal was to promote this ancient intangible cultural heritage. By combining it with objects from different cultures, Jiang hopes to give pyrography a new life.

At the Hubei Provincial Museum, many visitors stopped to look. Some picked up a long spoon with a lotus pattern. Others admired a ukulele painted with exotic vine designs. Jiang patiently explained how she uses a hot pen to create shades of brown on wood. A middle-aged visitor said, “I used to think that cultural heritage was only for the older generation. Seeing these young students put so much heart into it, and even mixing it with other cultures, is really touching.”

A representative from the Hubei Provincial Museum said they are happy to provide a platform for young inheritors of cultural heritage. “This ‘street stall’ form seems casual, but it actually shortens the distance between ancient art and modern life. The creativity of young people makes our heritage come alive.”

Jiang Panpan said she hopes to take her works abroad in the future. She wants to visit museums and cultural centers in other Asian countries. “Pyrography is Chinese, but it is also Asian. I want to show people that when an ancient craft meets different cultures, it can grow into something very interesting.”

As the sun set, the museum prepared to close. Jiang carefully packed a wine bottle decorated with lotus and bodhi leaf patterns into her wooden box. Her cart was small and creaked as she pushed it. But what it carried was a young woman’s dream – to connect the folk arts of Asia, one piece of burned wood at a time.(Correspondent:薛涵午 彭可怡 江盼盼)
